The Lake Martin Halloween House: One of the Lake’s Most Unique Fall Traditions

Lake Martin may be best known for long summer days on the water, but fall brings its own traditions to the lake.
One of the most unique is the Lake Martin Halloween House near Goat Island. Every October, the waterfront home transforms into a glowing Halloween display filled with lights, oversized decorations, spooky characters, and plenty of surprises for boaters passing by.
At The Good Life Lake Realty, we love the traditions that make Lake Martin feel like more than a summer destination. The Halloween House is a perfect example of the kind of local experience that makes fall at the lake so special.
A Halloween Display You See From the Water
Most Halloween light displays involve driving through a neighborhood.
At Lake Martin, you may need a boat instead!
The Halloween House is set along the shoreline just south of Goat Island and is designed to be enjoyed from the water. Once the sun goes down, the lights and decorations glow along the shoreline and reflect across the lake, turning an ordinary evening boat ride into something completely different.
Over the years, the display has become something local boaters look forward to each fall.
The Story Behind the Halloween House
The display belongs to homeowner Melanie Shelton, who has been collecting Halloween decorations for over 40 years!
After moving to Lake Martin full time, Melanie continued decorating even though she no longer had traditional neighborhood trick-or-treaters. Instead, passing boaters became the audience!
As more people noticed the display, it continued to grow with lights, large decorations, animated pieces, and new additions each year. What started as one homeowner's love of decorating for Halloween eventually became a Lake Martin tradition.
Make an Evening Out of It
Part of the fun is simply getting there.
October evenings at Lake Martin feel very different from July. The temperatures are cooler, the boat traffic is lighter, and the lake often feels calmer.
Pack a few blankets, head out before sunset, enjoy an evening cruise, and make the Halloween House one of your stops. It is an easy way to turn a quiet fall evening into a fun tradition for both kids and adults.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
Because the Halloween House is a private home, visitors should enjoy the display respectfully from the water.
Boaters should also slow down and pay attention to surrounding water conditions. Previous guidance has warned visitors about a no-wake area, a hazard buoy near the pier, and a sandbar in the area.
As Lake Martin's water level begins dropping in the fall, shallow areas can become more noticeable, so extra caution is important. Display dates and hours may also change from year to year, so check current Lake Martin community updates before heading out.
Fall at Lake Martin Has Its Own Personality
The Halloween House is a fun reminder that Lake Martin does not stop being special when summer ends.
Cooler temperatures
Less boat traffic
Calmer water

More time to slow down and enjoy the lake
For many homeowners, it is actually one of their favorite times of year. Lake Martin may look different in October, but that is part of what makes it so special.
